Health Effects of Fluoride in water

10 Facts you need to know about Fluoride in your water

  1. Water is not fluoridated in the most of developed countries

The US is in the first place in the world when it comes to people who drink fluoridated water. Even 97% of people from Western Europe drinks water which is not fluoridated.

  1. It is not true the number of people with tooth decay is reduced in countries with fluoridated water

The significant difference between fluoridated and non-fluoridated countries regarding tooth decay does not exist. It has been discovered that the growth of number of people with this condition, which has occurred in the US in the past 60 years, cannot be linked to water with fluoride, since it has also occurred in non-fluoridated, developed countries.

  1. It’s not just Your Teeth

There is a certain opinion in which fluoride is bad for the health of your teeth only, but a scientific review discovered that it can influence your brain, bones, pineal and thyroid gland, and levels of blood sugar. Brain damage and even 3 cases of children with IQ lower than normal from 34 studies have been linked to fluoride in many human and animal studies. Also, fluoride can cause many other health problems, due to its toxicity.

  1. There are no benefits of fluoridated water for infants

Tap water in fluoridated areas sometimes contains the huge amount of fluoride – 1,200 micrograms. This recommended amount for children is about 100 times less. This amount has many harmful effects, while having none benefits for teeth health.

For babies, it is even worse – not only they will probably experience dental fluorosis later on, but there is also a chance of having lower IQ. NIH (The National Institutes of Health) funded a meta-analysis conducted by Harvard University, in which it was discovered that infants from areas with high levels of fluoride in water supplies have IQ scores much lower than children who come from areas with low fluoride. According to some important dental researchers, baby formula must not contain fluoridated water.

  1. Even 40% of teenagers in the US are overexposed to fluoride

According to some researches, dental fluorosis is a problem for even 40% of the American youth. This condition is caused by overexposing to fluoride while teeth are in the process of forming. Fluoride changes the look of teeth. Children suffer from advanced forms of fluorosis in certain areas, with rates high up to even 70-80%.

From this, we can see that not only water is a source of fluoride; children receive it also from toothpaste with fluoride, processed food and drinks, tea, fluoride pesticides and drugs. This is also a problem, since not only this process has to be addressed as a problem, but we also have to address where else is fluoride coming from.

People also have to be aware that this condition is not only aesthetically ugly; this can be a serious problem. Fluorosis can mean that your organs, bones and even brain can be damaged by fluoride. If you notice fluorosis on your teeth, this means your bones are exposed to it as well, and will be damaged.

  1. The process of fluoridation cannot be considered as natural

In some areas, fluoridation is considered as a ‘’natural’’ process. Some water supplies contain a high level of it, and that’s what those who are for it use to defend it. However, natural substances in water supplies don’t always have to be safe, for example, arsenic.  Additionally, it’s not the fluoride that is usually found in water supplies, it’s more often fluorisilicic acid. According to FAN,

“This captured fluoride acid is the most contaminated chemical added to public water supplies, and may impose additional risks to those presented by natural fluorides. These risks include a possible cancer hazard from the acid’s elevated arsenic content, and a possible neurotoxic hazard from the acid’s ability–under some conditions–to increase the erosion of lead from old pipes.”

  1. FDA never approved Fluoride Supplements

FDA (the US Food and Drug Administration) has never approved the supplements based on fluoride as the medication for protection against tooth decay for people who drink non-fluoridated water. They even rejected them.

Once again, according to FAN:

“So with fluoridation, we are adding to the water a prescription-strength dose of a drug that has never been approved by the FDA,”

  1. Medicine in Public Water

According to FDA, fluoride is defined as a medicine for the prevention of tooth decay. This is why it is added to drinking water. However, this is not a nutrient that is important. The process of adding medication in water supply sound a bit inappropriate, so many European countries decided to decline it. You should have the ability to choose.

  1. Little benefits of Swallowing Fluoride

According to CDC (US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), the only benefits from fluoride come when it is form of pills which you swallow and water, and they are little.

  1. Underprivileged Communities are Most at risk from Fluoridation

Fluoride toxicity is intensified by circumstances that occur much more regularly in low-income areas. This includes:

  • Nutrient deficiencies
  • Infant formula consumption
  • Kidney disease
  • Diabetes
